Art at The Torrance Museum
Start the day off by the Torrance Cultural Arts Center. This tiny museum features an eclectic mix of contemporary local and international artists. It’s only 2 galleries that rotate often throughout the year, so it’s a perfectly chill way to start out your date!
During my latest visit, they were running one of their community enriching programs called Studio Systems II. It’s an artist residency program where the viewer gets a chance to see the creative process and ask the artists about their technique. I love a behind the scenes look at anything. Workflow is so important to creative achievement that I love to take notes from the experts on how to improve on my own. Especially how to stay confident, because being scrutinized while working on your art sounds extremely intimidating!
Artists featured: Jodi Bonassi, Chenhung Chen, Tom Dunn, Anna Garner, Lawrence Gipe, Debby and Larry Kline, Hagop Najarian, Khang Nguyen, Samuelle Richardson and Tyler Waxman
Absolution Brewing Company
After you’ve had your fill of culture, head over to one of Torrance’s many many breweries. There is an abundance of breweries to choose, but Absolution is definitely a must visit! First off, their branding is true to the theme and pure graphic design inspiration. More importantly, they have beers for everyone’s taste. My favorite are always their IPAs or Belgians. A lot of stouts and porters as well, but I usually just get a small taster of those. Always cheaper to get drinks here than at a bar, and they have a deal on Mondays and Tuesdays offering $5 pours. Look out for the food trucks on the weekend!
Finish off your date at the best Mexican food place you can find in Torrance. It’s specifically Oaxacan cuisine paired with delishhh cocktails. Choose from a variety of tequila shots that you can accompany with some crispy grasshoppers. Interestingly, they do go pretty well together but I wouldn’t do it everyday. The interiors decoration is what I enjoy the most about this location. It has a genuine Mexican feel to it including Virgin Mary murals that decorate the entrance. I really appreciate a carefully decorated bathroom as well, so I a bit of time admiring the flowers there.
- Pre-dinner: Guacamole, salsa and chips with chapulines (grasshoppers) with any tequila
- Food: Beginniger, Madre or Choriqueso Tlayuda or any of the moles
- Drink: El Chapo y Kate – I ordered it for the name and it was the best tequila drink I’ve ever had. Spicy.
